Abstract

This collection contains newspaper articles, photographs and printed matter related to the 1921 Pueblo Flood.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains postcards, photographs, newspaper clippings and the booklet entitled “Pueblo’s Flood in Pictures” all focusing on the impact of Pueblo’s 1921 flood.

Collection Historical Note

Downpours on June 3, 1921 caused both the Arkansas and Fountain Rivers to overflow their banks and break through levees washing away considerable portions of Pueblo. The resulting flood and fires caused significant devastation. Over 200 people were killed or missing and the estimated property damage was over $10 million. Much of the city needed rebuilding after the disaster, including all of the city utilities. The flood left a lasting impact on the psyche of the Pueblo community and it is still recalled as the most horrific event in the city’s history.
