Abstract

This collection consists of materials relating to Chairman Mao Zedong and the Chinese Cultural Revolution collected over a period of many years by Professor Beatrice Spade, Chinese and Japanese historian, Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Mao Zedong was the leader of the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman of the Peoples’ Republic during the Cultural Revolution. The collection consists of posters and artwork, books, artifacts and other assorted memorabilia relating to Chairman Mao Zedong and the Chinese Cultural Revolution, 1950s-2000s. The items were collected over a period of many years by the late Professor Beatrice Spade, Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Series 3: Artifacts

Sub-Series 1: Chairman Mao badges, 1966-1976

This subseries contains several thousand badges carrying the image of Chairman Mao. These badges were mass-produced through China, of plastic, metal, bamboo and porcelain and were worn by virtually everyone as a symbol of loyalty and patriotism during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, 1966-1976.

Several books describing the badges with photographs for identification purposes are also included.

Sub-Series 2: Statuary

This subseries contains ca. 20 small statues and busts of Chairman Mao and other political figures. The figures are plastic, porcelain and other materials. It also includes other memorabilia like ashtrays, a platter, and standing emblems.
