Collection Historical Note

Las Hermanas was a national support group active at many college campuses throughtout the United States. The sorority’s main objectives were to encourage Hispanic women to enroll in college and then offer them support in overcoming obstacles on their path towards pursuing their higher educational endeavors. In practice the sorority was open to all regardless of ethnicity or gender. Las Hermanas met its objectives by offering a variety of services including recruitment and retention efforts, scholarship fundraisers, referral services, crisis intervention services, campus support groups and the publication of a monthly newsletter. Las Hermanas was formed nationally in 1971; however, it was not until 1981 that the Pueblo chapter was established and became inclusive of over one hundred members from the Pueblo Community College and the University of Southern Colorado campuses in Pueblo, Colorado. The Pueblo [Catholic] Diocese was instrumental in the formation of the Pueblo chapter, most notably through the efforts of Father Ralph Woodward, Sister DeChantal Garcia, and Sister Alice Glassmaker. In January of 1997 the group, although always having been open to men as well, officially bridged the gender gap as announced in the Las Hermanas newsletter that month which announced that the sorority was changing its name to Las Hermanas y Los Hermanos. .
