Administrative/Biographical History
The Rita J. Martinez Youth Leadership Conference is a conference held at Colorado State University — Pueblo and aims to inspire regional students in honor of the late activist Rita J. Martinez. Organized by El Movimiento Sigue, the conference continued despite Martinez's passing from COVID-19 in December 2020, reflecting her vision of drawing strength from the past and continuing the Chicano movement. The event, spearheaded by Martinez's son Tomas Martinez Ortega, brought together a community of over 70 volunteers, educators, and organizers. The Rita J. Martinez Leadership Conference addresses the importance of regional history often excluded from school curricula, providing students an opportunity to connect with their heritage. Workshops cover topics such as understanding power, knowing one's rights, and exploring cultural aspects, fostering self-expression and empowerment. The Rita J. Martinez Leadership Conference is dedicated to preserving cultural traditions, promoting mental health, and encouraging social relationships among youth. The event, sponsored in part by the Women’s Foundation of Colorado, serves as a platform for students to embrace their identities, share insights, and contribute to their communities.
