Abstract

Two videotapes containing clips filmed by Carmen Arteaga and documenting the Chicano Movement in Pueblo, Denver and Colorado.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of two videorecordings which document the history of the Chicano Movement in Colorado in the early 1970s.  Includes clips of racial unrest at Centennial High School (Pueblo, CO), District 60 meetings, Crusade for Justice demonstrations, police harrassment, rallies, marches and demonstrations, Chicano Teatro, Cinco de Mayo parade (Pueblo, CO).  Corky Gonzales, Martin Serna, Ricardo Romero, Eddie Montour, Francisco Coca.  Also contains clips of cultural events.

00:00              Begins with unknown group playing Mexican music

02:07              Vacation video? Dancers and people playing at the beach.

04:21              Danza de los Voladores de Papantla:  four voladores (birdmen), one each for the gods of sun, wind, earth and                                water, swing from a rope tethered to their ankle around a pole as high as 100 feet and gradually descend to                                    the ground.

06:10              An introduction to and a performance by a Mariachi group.

07:13              Dance practice by men and women. A Charro practices with his rope and then more dance instruction.

09:16              An awards assembly (skips heavily in the beginning) in English and Spanish.

10:32              Ricardo Romero Speech (same assembly)

12:24              Unidentified woman speaker.

18:16              Student interviews in front of the Pueblo County Jail about race fight between Chicano, black and white                                            students at Centennial High School. Several Chicanos arrested.

27:31              Possibly City Council meeting about district 60, especially Centennial concerning race fight.

34:54              District 60 School Board meeting?  Speakers concerned with the students treatment and education.

40:17              March 17, 1974 demonstration in support of the Crusade for Justice at the Colorado State Capitol Building in                                  Denver Co. Shows Corky Gonzales several times. Set to Mexican protest songs.

46:51              Interview with people about polluted water and that they will keep their land.

50:05              Eddie Montour and other community members speaking about police harassment.

53:19              Rally at St. Leanders Church. Corky Gonzales is speaking.

55:46              Outside St. Leanders interviewing people about the Chucky Salazar police brutality case.

56:33              Francisco Coca (Spanish and English) interview about educational system.

59:47              March begins at Mineral Palace Park and continues down Main St. and continues to 4th St. in protest of police                                brutality.

01:09:11          An artist with Eddie Montour talks about the inspiration of one of his paintings and what he feels makes an                                      artist a Chicano artist. Also talks about the oppression of Chicano artists throughout the educational system.

01:31:39          Cinco De Mayo parade starts at Mineral Palace continues down Main St. and then to 4th St.  End of the                                            parade undetermined.

01:41:11          Martin Serna, speakers after the parade speaking about: unity, history, police brutality, educational system.

01:47:36          Several clips of people enjoying the Cinco de Mayo festivities.
