Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of copies of photographs of members of the Chavez and Coca families. It includes images of Agapita Coca Chavez, Candelario Chavez, Elfido Chavez, and Regino Coca. The images date from approximately 1857 to 1973. The photographs are collected from the Salt Creek Neighborhood Memory Project, which brings together sources relating to life in the primarily Mexican-American, Hispanic, and Chicano community of Salt Creek, a census-designated area in Pueblo County, Colorado.
Collection Historical Note
The Salt Creek Memory Project represents a community-driven initiative within the realm of public history, meticulously chronicling the narratives and heritage of the Salt Creek community located in Pueblo County, Colorado. Salt Creek has a longstanding Mexican-American heritage and takes its name from the dark-hued watercourse that traverses its territory. A significant portion of Salt Creek's inhabitants, affectionately known as "Creekers," have been actively engaged in employment at the mill or in agricultural endeavors within the vicinity of their neighborhood. Over the years, both past and present residents have come together in collaboration with the El Pueblo History Museum to co-author a comprehensive and enriched history of their community.
Biographical Note
Edna grew up in the Pueblo community of Salt Creek. During World War II, she left high school to help supoort the family. She later got her GED and and went onto take college courses in computer science. She raised four children. She worked at the First National Bank of Pueblo and later retired from there. She also worked at Evraz (formerly Colorado Fuel and Iron) and retired form there, as well. She was active in the Pueblo Cameo Club. She was aslo active in the Genealogy Society of Hispanic America. She would later participate in the Latino History Project which highlighted the Mexican/American culture and history of the Salt Creek community.
